Review: Croma, Didsbury

If you're a foodie, Didsbury is a great place to be right now. There's great variety for eating out and a restaurant or cafe to suit pretty much every budget. There are also new eateries opening up, including the soon-to-be serving SoLiTa (sister restaurant of the same name in Manchester) and the newly opened Croma (again with other venues elsewhere in God's favourite city).

Headed up by a team of ex Pizza Express pros, Croma opened its first restaurant in 2000 and is a solid alternative to the home of Orange Wednesdays. The chain's seventh restaurant opened last month in Didsbury and offers up an evening of good food on a reasonable budget. Two courses and a drink are likely to set you back no more than £15-20 and with taste to spare.

It's not just pizza either. For Nando's fans, they offer up fiery piri-piri prawns on bruschetta as part of a starter menu that offers plenty of variety ahead of the main course speciality. Although there's a healthy range of salads and oven-cooked dishes, Croma are all about the pizza and brand themselves as such.
Their gourmet tag might suggest high-end but the price is offset by standardised 10-inch bases, so you're unlikely to get the rustic feel of a sprawling dough, but the toppings make up for the franchise-esque approach. Adorning the topping options menu is everything from goats cheese to cumberland sausage, via piri-piri chicken and rump steak.

Croma have fitted out the Didsbury venue (formerly GBK) with a modern interior typical of most hard-furnished Italians, so expect plenty of noise when busy. With the nights closing in, its a great place for an after-work dinner or a couples' night, and all without breaking the bank.
