The DJ Set Is Dead, Long Live The DJ Set

As any postgraduate will tell you, the lure of a Z-list celebrity making a public appearance at their favourite nighspot wanes further and further as each year of study passes. Freshers will flock to catch a glimpse of the last surviving members of S Club 7, while third years are more likely to turn up to throw a pint of piss.

Other than being slightly devastated when Wagner cancelled last minute on a gig at my uni, I learned pretty quickly that the promise of a DJ set from Dave Benson-Phillips or the cast of Made In Chelsea is only going to end up in limp disappointment. I believe the tipping point was seeing Matt Horne (Gavin from Gavin & Stacey) pick up a couple hundred quid to press play on a couple of tracks and leave 10 minutes later.

Unfortunately, having banished the thought of a now 'rounder' Bradley from S Club touring the UK's student unions, I was recently enticed back to the celeb DJ set. And, in my defence, you can understand why. Haim were playing a gig in town and were celebrating afterwards with an appearance at my favourite club.
Good band, good place. Good music, you'd expect. The result was far from it. It turns out Haim, super-cool Jewish girl band from California, like to get down to the same music you'd get at a 90s school disco. As a fan of musicals, I'm not exactly averse to cheese, but I didn't fork over a higher entrance fee to my usual Saturday night to see Haim dropping B*Witched and the Spice Girls. If I wanted to see that, I'd go and watch the Big Reunion (should they not be on the aforementioned uni circuit).

Thankfully, they only hung around for an hour and let the regular DJ back on, leaving me to Shazam to my heart's content. I'll forgive Haim for their set, and extinguishing my last hope for the guest DJ set, but from now on, I'll leave the DJing to the residents.
